Literature Text

Sometimes I stop caring
though everyone is staring
Despite all my preparing
my thoughts get blown away.

A moment's hesitation
an hour's contemplation
This cross-examination
is the price I have to pay.

A minute of reprieve
not long enough to grieve
They tell me now to leave
with the lessons I have learned.

Deny these accusations
these thieving implications
I have no explanations;
this shame I've rightly earned.
I wrote this a couple years ago. It felt unfinished at the time, and looking at it now it still feels a bit unfinished, but I think it's fine the way it is, really.

This poem was inspired by two situations. I wrote the first verse while sitting in a Public Speaking class, in relation to how I felt about giving a speech. Also, I had recently been fired, and I let some of those thoughts and feelings mesh into the poem. As a result, the poem is very personal on two levels.

Even though it was inspired by specific events and feelings, I think anyone can relate to it. We've all felt this way at some point or another, for different reasons.
